Glengate Project

Belle Haven Transformation

This waterfront property located in Greenwich, Connecticut’s storied enclave of Belle Haven was comprised of mostly lawn space—and was lacking in style and personality—when Glengate undertook its transformation. As Vanderhorn Architects removed the existing 1950s house to make way for a new residence, we began to envision how to maximize the outdoor spaces for the active young family moving in.

The site was relatively tight, and its close proximity to the Long Island Sound—and the regulations associated with that—was a challenge. By dividing the landscape into levels, though, we were able to add a generous pool area complete with a three-season pool house and spacious patio for entertaining. A main highlight: the spa, where we engineered a water weir feature and rill that flows from spa to pool. Our designers also established locations for flower gardens and a fire pit down on the shore, and drainage issues were improved with elements such as a colorful rain garden. Vanderhorn positioned the new house differently from the original structure, allowing for us to create a fresh approach to the driveway and parking area, which were built by our in-house masons. Glengate’s night lighting, landscape installation, and irrigation teams completed all the finishing touches and brought this completely reimagined property to life. It continues to flourish under the maintenance of our property care team—allowing the spaces to fulfill our landscape architects’ design intent and provide a beautiful setting for family life.
